Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, and they say that means six more weeks of Winter. But you sure can't tell it by this weather. Maybe Staten Island Chuck is the groundhog to watch these days. He's predicting an early Spring.

Squirrel Removal and Control

Squirrel removal is one of our most in-demand animal control services. Removing squirrels from attics in Atlanta, North-Central Georgia, and Aiken, South Carolina; repairing squirrel damage; and squirrel-proofing homes keeps us busy in the spring, fall, and winter.

Most squirrel calls start when someone hears scratching noises in the attic or walls. Squirrels usually are the culprits, but sometimes mice, rats or birds can get into attics and wall voids and make noises.

Our motion-sensitive, infrared Attic Cam (see the sidebar in the next section) can positively identify which animal is in your attic, if there's any doubt, as well as help us know how the critters are getting in and out.

The most common squirrels in Georgia are the gray squirrel and the flying squirrel. Both of these animals spend much of their time in trees, attics, and other high places, but there are some differences. This page deals with gray squirrel removal; please click here for information on flying squirrels.

Gray squirrels are acrobats. They use their excellent balance to walk along tree branches and utility lines to get into buildings. They also can also climb vertically on trees, shingles, asphalt, and most exterior building materials. They often get into houses through chimneys or roof vents, or by gnawing at existing holes. Their aerial skills make squirrel removal a challenge.

A squirrel's diet consists mainly of nuts, and their powerful jaws and sharp teeth can chew holes through wood, siding, and other building materials, often causing serious damage to both the building and any belongings in it. Squirrels also increase the risk of fire by gnawing on electrical wires. This is of special concern in Georgia, with all our irreplaceable historic buildings.

Squirrels also pose health risks because of their urine, droppings, shed fur, and disease-causing parasites. Dead squirrels can cause odors, and their corpses provide a breeding place for flies and other disease vectors when they die in wall and ceiling voids, soffits, and other inaccessible areas.

Squirrel Removal and Squirrel-Proofing

Squirrel removal, trapping and exclusion are challenging and hazardous. They're definitely not do-it-yourself jobs, nor are most exterminators equipped to perform squirrel control properly. In fact, there's no such thing as "squirrel exterminating" or "squirrel pest control" because squirrels are considered nuisance wildlife, not pests. Squirrels must be controlled using humane, non-toxic squirrel removal methods, such as trapping and relocation, repairs, and exclusion ("squirrel-proofing").

Permanent squirrel control requires specialized equipment and a keen knowledge of squirrel behavior. It also requires working in high places using long ladders, scaffolding, or bucket trucks ("cherry pickers") -- not the kind of equipment most people have sitting around in their garages.

So don't waste your time and endanger your life trying do-it-yourself squirrel control, nor waste your money with companies that don't have the equipment and know-how to do the job right. Call us instead for long-lasting squirrel removal and exclusion that's backed by the best warranty in the business.
