Squirrel Removal and Control

Our Newest Squirrel-Removal Tool: The Attic Cam

Our infrared, robotic cameras watch your attic to identify the pesky animals up there, giving us a high-tech edge in squirrel control.

The attic cam finds that sneaky squirrel who's been so hard to remove.

Using heat and motion sensors, the attic cam shows us who's in your attic and how he gets in and out. This is just one more reason to choose Rid-A-Critter, the company that's revolutionizing squirrel removal in Atlanta and throughout North-Central Georgia.

Squirrel removal is always one of our most in-demand animal control services, but this year, because of the unusual weather, we started getting squirrel removal calls a lot earlier than we usually would, and removing squirrels from attics, repairing squirrel damage, and squirrel-proofing homes have been keeping us very busy.

Most squirrel removal calls start when someone hears scratching noises in the attic or walls. Squirrels usually are the culprits, but sometimes mice, rats or birds can get into attics and wall voids and make noises. Our top-secret, newfangled, motion-sensitive, infrared Attic Cam (see the sidebar on the right) can positively identify which animal is in your attic, if there's any doubt.

Nuisance Squirrels of Georgia

The most common squirrels in Georgia are the gray squirrel and the flying squirrel. Both of these animals spend much of their time in trees, attics, and other high places; but there are some differences. This page deals with gray squirrel removal; please click here for information on flying squirrels.

Gray squirrels are acrobats. They have excellent balance and easily walk along tree branches and utility lines to get into buildings. They also can also climb vertically on any surface that allows them to get a good grip, such as trees, shingles, asphalt, and most exterior building materials. They often get into houses through chimneys or roof vents, or by gnawing at existing holes, such as the openings where wires enter a building. Their aerial skills can make squirrel removal a challenge.

Gray squirrels become a nuisance when they get into houses and other buildings. A squirrel's diet consists mainly of nuts, and their powerful jaws and sharp teeth are built-in nutcrackers. They also use those jaws to chew holes through wood, siding, and other building materials, which can cause serious damage to both the building and any belongings stored in it. When squirrels get into a home or other building, they have to be removed.

Squirrels also increase the risk of fire when they gnaw on electrical wires. This is of special concern in Georgia, with all our irreplaceable historic buildings.

Squirrels also pose some health risks because of their urine, droppings, shed fur, and disease-causing parasites. Dead squirrels can cause odors and serve as a breeding medium for flies and other disease vectors when they die in wall and ceiling voids, soffits, and other inaccessible areas. This is one reason why you should call an animal control specialist, not a "squirrel exterminator," for squirrel control.

Squirrel Removal and Squirrel-Proofing in Georgia

Squirrel removal, trapping and exclusion are among the more challenging and hazardous urban wildlife management jobs we do. They're definitely not do-it-yourself jobs, nor are most exterminators equipped to perform squirrel control properly. There's no such thing as "squirrel exterminating" or "squirrel pest control" because squirrels are considered nuisance wildlife, not pests, and must be controlled using humane removal methods such as trapping and relocation, repairs, and exclusion ("squirrel-proofing").

Rid-A-Critter can handle any squirrel removal job, no matter how difficult, like this Atlanta squirrel-proofing job.

Permanent squirrel control requires specialized equipment and a keen knowledge of squirrel behavior. It also requires working in high places using long ladders, scaffolding, or bucket trucks ("cherry pickers") -- not the kind of equipment most people have sitting around in their garages.

So don't waste your time and endanger your life trying do-it-yourself squirrel control, nor waste your money with companies that don't have the equipment and know-how to do the job right. Call us instead for long-lasting squirrel removal and exclusion that's backed by the best warranty in the business.

Environmentally-Responsible Squirrel Control

Rid-A-Critter provides safe, professional, non-chemical squirrel removal in Atlanta, Macon, Athens, Columbus, Roswell, and most of Georgia. Our earth-friendly, humane squirrel control uses long-lasting control methods, like trapping, exclusion, and habitat modification, not poisoning. We were doing "green" squirrel control before being green was in style. Our comprehensive squirrel control program includes:
