Like wolves, dogs, and foxes, Coyotes belong to the family Canidae (or Canines).
The coyote's taxonomical name, Canis latrans, literally means "yelping dog;" and the coyote's distinctive cry is becoming an ever more common sound in the still of the Georgia night as the coyote population continues to increase.
Coyotes are handsome animals who range in size from 15 to 40 pounds. Coyotes look a lot like small to medium-sized dogs, withy pointy snouts, upright ears, and bushy tails. Most coyotes in Georgia are mottled gray or brownish-grey in color, but they have a wide range of color variations ranging from yellowish red to almost black.
In nature, coyotes are relatively shy and timid, as canines go. They hunt at night for rodents and other small animals and are infrequently seen during the day. They avoid humans and rarely attack people in wild areas.
As their natural habitat shrinks, coyotes and other urban wildlife are increasingly being forced to live and search for food in human-occupied areas. If they are confronted, they can and will attack; so coyotes in human-populated areas present a public safety threat.
In addition, like all wild carnivores, coyotes are susceptible to rabies and other zoonotic, parasitic, and arboviral diseases. They also present a threat to livestock (especially poultry, rabbits, and other small animals) and to domestic pets (especially cats).
Coyotes also may attack people if they are accidentally cornered or feel threatened. Small children are especially at risk because they sometimes mistake coyotes for dogs and attempt to pet or play with them.
Coyote are pretty intelligent animals; and like all canine control work, coyote trapping can be difficult and dangerous. It's certainly not a job for an amateur.
