Beavers are common throughout Georgia. Their tree-felling activity can damage valuable trees, and their dam-building can cause floods, damage property, and provide a breeding medium for mosquitoes.
Beavers are large, semi-aquatic rodents common to all parts of Georgia. They're best known for their industrious work ethic and their habit of damming creeks to create pools in which they store food and raise their young, and which may serve as a refuge from predators.
Beavers have some admirable qualities, especially their work habits. In fact, the "busy beaver" is a symbol of hard work. But all the hard work beavers put into building swimming pools for themselves create a real headache for us humans.
Beavers become a nuisance when they kill valuable trees to build dams. In addition, the dams themselves often flood out and damage property or make it useless for other purposes. When this happens, the property owners tend not to admire the beavers quite so much.
The "best" approach for any particular beaver control job depends on the situation. Beavers usually are controlled by trapping. In addition to beaver trapping, beaver shields or "tree guards" can sometimes be installed on vulnerable trees to prevent beavers from felling them.
